Shamanism
A Shaman´s Journey
A Spiritual Practice
Shamanism is an ancient healing tradition and a way of life. The teachings of shamanism focus on our connection to nature and promote the well-being of all creation.
It is a spiritual practice found in cultures around the world from ancient times up to the present day. First and foremost, shamans' practices are practical and adaptable. These practices coexist over millennia with varying cultures, systems of government, and organised religious practices.
Nowadays, in non-indigenous cultures, shamanism is studied and practiced as a life path. Following a shamanistic perspective, individuals seek to be in relationship with the spirit in all things. They seek to use information and guidance from non-ordinary reality to intentionally form their own life experience.
Essential aspects of shamanic life include journeying, ceremony, sacred dance and pilgrimages to places of power in nature. Through these techniques the shamanic circle embraces us, unifying our lives with strength, healing and love.
Shamanistic Perspective of Life
Learning about shamanism is close to exploring boundaries of consciousness and beyond and to journey between the worlds of energy and form. Shamanism involves mastering the techniques of dream, vision, and trance in order to enter into ecstatic states at will.
A shaman is an intermediary between this world and the spirit world. They act on behalf of the community conducting ceremonial rituals, healing the people, and helping to guide others on the shamanic path. A shaman’s life belongs to the village and it is their responsibility to ensure the wellbeing of the family, the community and all of creation. In this way the shaman helps to maintain balance and harmony on both a personal and planetary level.
Within shamanism many different methods are used, such as drumming, dreaming, meditation, rattling, chanting, singing, dancing, fasting, spending time alone in nature. During this course we will look at different aspects of shamanism.
“Shamanism is a path of knowledge, not of faith, and that knowledge cannot come from me or anyone else in this reality. To acquire that knowledge, including the knowledge of the reality of the spirits, it is necessary to step through the shaman’s doorway and acquire empirical evidence.” Michael Harner
